CBSE Class 12 Biology Exam Pattern

The Class 12 Biology exam typically follows a structured pattern to analyse students’ understanding of the subject. Here is a general overview of the exam pattern: 

  • Duration: 3 hours
  • Total marks: 70 marks 

The question paper has five sections and 33 questions. All questions are compulsory. 

  • Section A has 16 questions of one mark each and is mostly multiple-choice.

Example: Remnants of nucellus are persistent during seed development in

  1. a) pea; b) groundnut; c) wheat; d) black pepper
  • Section B has five very short-answer type questions of 2 marks each.

Example: Explain the process of hormonal regulation of spermatogenesis.

  • Section C has seven short-answer type questions of 3 marks each.

Example: Explain the phases in embryonic development from the morula stage until the establishment of pregnancy in a human female.

  • Section D has two case-based questions of 4 marks each; the case-based questions contain 3–4 sub-questions. 
  • Section E has three long-answer questions of 5 marks each and requires a detailed approach. 

There is no overall choice. However, internal choices have been provided in some questions. A student has to attempt only one of the alternatives to such questions.
