ICSE Class 10th English Literature Notes And Videos

CISCE has changed the syllabus of class 10th ICSE English Literature for the current year 2024-25. The syllabus includes Drama, Prose (Short Stories), and Poetry.

The question set will be central to the text. Excerpts may be provided from the drama and prose textsbooks. A poem, or a few lines from poems, will be provided, and questions will be set to test the students' responses.

Although the syllabus has been changed entirely, students need not worry as all these topics will be covered by sir Tarun Rupani.

1. Julius Caeser: Act 3 Scene 1

In Act 3 Scene 1 of Julius Caesar, Caesar is assassinated by the conspirators at the Capitol, led by Brutus and Cassius. Following the murder, Mark Antony cleverly secures permission to speak at Caesar's funeral, hinting at his plan for revenge.

2. Julius Caeser: Act 3 Scene 2

In Act 3 Scene 1 of Julius Caesar," Brutus addresses the public, justifying Caesar's assassination as an act to save Rome from tyranny. Mark Antony then gives a powerful speech, turning the crowd against the conspirators by highlighting Caesar's positive qualities and questioning the motives behind his murder. The crowd, stirred by Antony's words, becomes enraged and seeks revenge against the conspirators.

3. Julius Caeser: Act 3 Scene 3

In Act 3, Scene 3, an enraged mob mistakenly identifies Cinna, the poet, as one of the conspirators and brutally kills him. This scene highlights the chaotic and violent aftermath of Antony's funeral speech.

12. Prose: The Girl Who Can – Ama Ata Aidoo

This story is about a young girl named Adjoa, who has thin legs and dreams of running. This story beautifully explains how, despite her grandmother's doubts and societal expectations, Adjoa discovers her talent and wins a race.

13. Prose: The Pedestrian – Ray Bradbury

The story is set in the future years of 2052-53. The main character of the story is Leonard Mead, who enjoys walking alone at night in a society where people are obsessed with television. One evening, an incident took place when Leonard Mead was out for a walk.  After that what happens is narrated in the story.

14. Prose: The Last Lesson – Alphonse Daudet

The story Last Lesson is written by Alphonse Daudet. The story highlights the patriotism and the importance of language. The story revolves around a young boy named Franz who attends his last French lesson in Alsace as Prussia seizes the region. What happens there is narrated in the story.

15. Poetry: Haunted Houses – H.W. Longfellow

This poem reflects the memories and spirits present at the house, symbolizing a sense of nostalgia and the presence of the past. It encourages readers to think deeply about ghosts and their purpose. The poet says that the dead stay in the places they once lived, giving a sense of satisfaction to humans who imagine that their loved ones are still with them, possibly as ghosts.

16. Poetry: The Glove and the Lions – Leigh Hunt

The poem "The Glove and the Lions" is a ballad, meaning, telling a story in the form of a poem. King Francis arranges a lion fight, his favourite sport. There was a beautiful young woman seated among the audience who tried to show off her lover's affection for her by testing him. But ends up insulting her because her pride reveals her pride, exposing her true nature.

17. Poetry: When Great Trees Fall – Maya Angelou

The poem "When Great Trees Fall" is an emotional poem written by Maya Angelou, comparing nature to humans. She compares great trees to great people, saying that losing great people is like an old tree being destroyed and this leads to disturbing the balance of the forest. The poem ends on a positive note, explaining that we can find comfort in knowing these great people who once lived among us. We can be inspired by their lives and strive to be great like them.

18. Poetry: A Considerable Speck – Robert Frost

This poem shows Frost's talent for focusing on small details. The poet sees a speck of dust, which is actually an insect trying to save its life from the poet’s pen. Finally, the insect surrenders, letting the poet decide whether to kill it or let it live. The poet finds the insect harmless and allows it to stay, amazed that such a small creature can think. So, he lets the insect rest on the paper as long as it wants.

19. Poetry: The Power of Music – Sukumar Ray

This poem by Sukamar Ray is a humorous poem where he talks about a vocally bad and irritating singer named Bhisma Lochan Sharma. He sings in such a loud and harsh voice that the listeners, even plants and animals, want him not to sing. But Bhisma is so adamant about singing. Finally, one day, he gets struck by a goat, and thus, his singing ends forever.
