Gerrad proposed a mystery that, when explained, turned out to be a story made up by him. He made it to dodge the intrudur and to save himself. Gerrard claimed himself to be a criminal and asked the intruder—why would he (Gerrard) not meet any tradespeople? He even asked why he would be a bit of a mystery man today and gone tomorrow. 

Suddenly something went wrong for him, and then the game was up. He got away after he committed the murder. Unfortunately, some things were found because his men weren't able to burn something, which led to one of his men getting arrested. His bag was packed as he was expecting some trouble that night, and he was prepared to escape.
