Answer:

By "human disaster," Mandela is implying that the prejudice of white people has caused a great deal of suffering for people of colour. The fact that a Black person became president of a nation where Black people are not treated fairly and are not seen as human beings was, in his opinion, a magnificent and glorious human achievement.
