At the beginning of his speech, Mandela mentions “an extraordinary human disaster.” What does he mean by this? What is the “glorious … human achievement” he speaks of at the end?
By "human disaster," Mandela is implying that the prejudice of white people has caused a great deal of suffering for people of colour. The fact that a Black person became president of a nation where Black people are not treated fairly and are not seen as human beings was, in his opinion, a magnificent and glorious human achievement.
