Question:

(i) Find out the longitudinal and latitudinal extent of your state.

(ii) Collect information about the ‘Silk Route’. Also find out the new developments, which are improving communication routes in the regions of high altitude.

Answer:

(i) My state is Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh is situated between 23°52'N and 31°28'N latitudes and 77°3'E and 84°39'E longitudes. Uttar Pradesh is the fourth largest state in the country in terms of area, and the first in terms of population.

(ii) The Silk Route is neither an actual road nor a single route but the term refers to a network of routes used by traders for more than 1,500 years, from when the Han dynasty of China started to trade in 130 B.C.E. until 1453 C.E. when the Ottoman Empire closed off trade with the West. In 1877, German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen first used the term "silk road" to describe the well-travelled pathway of goods between Europe and East Asia. Although the trade network is commonly referred to as the Silk Road, some historians favour the term Silk Routes because it better reflects the many paths taken by traders.

New developments for improving communication routes: Recently, several new developments have been made which are improving communication routes in the regions of high altitude. Now, we have motorable roads, railway lines, tunnels and caves. Means of communication such as telephones, satellite phones, mobile phones etc. have also been developed in high altitudes in recent times.
