The CBSE Class 10 English Language and Literature paper is designed to test students' proficiency in the English language, focusing on reading, writing, grammar, and literature. Section A: Reading (20 marks)

This section tests the student's ability to interpret passages. It includes two types of passages:

  • Discursive Passages (10 Marks): This passage is around 350–400 words long and includes 8–10 objective-type questions, such as MCQs, fill-in-the-blanks, and short answer questions. 
  • Factual Passage (10 Marks): This passage is typically around 200–250 words and includes questions similar to those in the factual passage. 

Section B: Writing and Grammar (20 marks)

This section evaluates the students’ writing skills and command of grammar. It is further divided into:

  • Writing: It includes formal letters and sometimes short stories based on the topic given. 
  • Grammar: Grammar is worth 10 marks and includes sentence transformation and fill-in-the-blanks. 

Section C: Literature (40 marks)

This section includes questions from prose and poetry books; they may include extract-based questions, short-answer questions, and long-answer questions.
