The influence of technology is very dominant these days. Almost everyone has access to technology one way or another, people use ATM machines for money, watching TV, listening to songs and reading books are also possible because of technology.
Similarly, technology influences teaching style. The old way of teaching was far more different than today’s teaching style. At that time, teachers explained the concepts and students took notes. But today, the whole idea of teaching is entirely different.
Today, teachers, as well as students, need a method which not only engages them in the classroom but also connects them with and finds it interesting to process and comprehend.
This is where the visual learning tools come into play. Human beings not only understand visuals 60000x faster than text, but visuals have a far more impact on their long-term memory than other learning methods.
It mainly focuses on observing the video. There are different ways to learn through visual learning such as images, videos, charts, graphs, etc. Let’s take a look at the objective of visual learning strategies.
The whole process of visual learning is based on two factors–Observation and Identification.
Let’s take an example:
If you show a picture of a tree to students and ask them “What do you see in this picture?”. Two things will happen after this question–first, students will observe the picture and then, they will identify what the picture is about. The answer depends on how well the students identify and observe the picture.
The human brain is equipped in such a way that it creates visual appearances for whatever we read or hear. Several studies concluded that people learn better with visualisation. Therefore, visual learning can be more powerful and memorable.
Before discussing visual learning, we need to understand its importance. It is quite common for students to get distracted during theoretical lectures. So, teachers need to stimulate some graphical images, charts, maps etc. to engage the students.
Enhancing memory and stimulating the creativity of students are two challenges that teachers mainly face. Now, there are a lot of techniques which are used in the classroom to solve these problems, but visualisation still stands out as an effective technique.
How to Implement Visual Learning in Class 9 & 10?
According to National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, visual learning can be useful in classes 9th and 10th. There are some ways through which teachers can use Visual Learning Strategies in different subjects.
The diagram exemplifies how we (Educart) use mind maps in mathematical topics. Similarly, teachers can use diagrams and mind maps to teach every subject by revising the whole topic more effectively.
Diagrams are an excellent way for science learners. Teachers can show different types of diagrams such as the Schematic diagram, Illustrations, Mechanics diagrams, optics drawings and many more. They can also use keywords, instead of long phrases and colour coding to recall information faster. This will help students to get an idea about the concept in a visual way, which would help them understand the concept.
Teachers can use pie charts and geometrical figures to teach topics to students in a simpler way. All of these tools will help them learn or teach economics. There are multiple types of diagrams such as the argand diagram, butterfly diagram, Venn diagram and others.
The teachers should use these tools such as graphs, pie charts, and images meaningfully and not use too much text to clutter up the infographics. Keep it simple and highlight the major points which are important for students to remember.
Videos help in creating an overview of complex topics by using different types of graphics. These can be presented in a fun and engaging way for students. The visual representation of the concept summarises the lessons that would be easy for a student to remember.
There are multiple platforms where videos are available, so teachers can download the videos directly from there, and use them for their teaching. Videos cover every aspect of a topic in a simpler way to understand.
Add maps and PowerPoint presentations to teach subjects such as Social Science, Hindi, and English. Teachers can add different types of images, graphs, and charts to make the presentation more appealing. Teachers can try to make lectures as interesting as they can, so the students can remember the information.
As a teacher, it is crucial to understand the preferences of learning students. So, that it can help them in the path of fluency.
There are other ways of visual learning that also can be used. Visual learning is an effective method in multiple ways such as clarifying the concept, simplifying complex topics, easing communication, simplifying teaching, improving learning and so on.
