Explain the following in terms of gain or loss of oxygen with two examples each:
(a) Oxidation
(b) Reduction
(a) Oxidation: The process that involves the addition of oxygen is oxidation.
(i) 2Mg + O2 → 2MgO
Oxidation of Magnesium to form Magnesium oxide.
(ii) 4Fe + 3O2 → 2Fe2O3
Oxidation of Iron to form Ferric oxide.
(b) Reduction: The process that involves the loss of oxygen is reduction.
(i)2PbO + C → 2Pb + CO2
Reduction of oxygen from lead to form carbon dioxide.
(i)Zn + CuSO4 → ZnSO4 + Cu
Reduction of oxygen from copper (II) sulfate to form zinc sulfate and copper.
