Question:

Kerala has a sex ratio of 1084 females per 1000 males, Puducherry has 1038 females for every 1000 males, while Delhi has only 866 females per 1000 males and Haryana has just 877. What could be the reasons for such variations?

Answer:

Kerala and Pondicherry have a higher number of females per 1000 males in comparison to Delhi and Haryana because:

  • Kerala and Pondicherry have good health facilities.
  • There is a lesser infant mortality rate.
  • There are higher literacy rates due to that there is lesser female foeticide.
  • In Delhi and Haryana, there is a migration of young males due to employment. This leads to a high number of males in comparison to females.
  • Haryana has high female foeticide because of orthodox thinking of people for having a male child. This has led to a skewed sex ratio in Haryana.
