CUET 2025 UG will be a computer-based test (CBT) from next year onwards instead of the hybrid mode adopted for the 2024 exams. Students will be allowed to appear for those subjects that aren't studied in Class 12, University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairperson M. Jagadesh Kumar announced on Tuesday.

The UGC also said that the number of subjects would be reduced from 63 to 37, and admission for programs in removed subjects would be based on the General Aptitude Test scores. As per the UGC- "The feedback received from the past years, the committee is continuously working to streamline the examination process to make it more effective and student-friendly for the CUET 2025 aspirants. The committee deliberated on matters like the exam pattern, the number of tests, the duration, the syllabus guidelines, and the marking scheme. The recommendations were taken into account during the meeting of the panel.
"Candidates will also be allowed to opt for subjects in CUET-UG that they haven't studied in Class 12 to help students cross rigid disciplinary boundaries in higher education," Kumar said.
The shift to computer-based mode is done to reduce the scope of human errors in evaluation," Kumar explained. "CBT allows faster result processing and enhanced security, ensuring the integrity of the process. All compulsory questions would ensure a level playing field, testing the overall competency of the candidates on the same set of questions. This format would encourage the students to prepare well across all areas of the syllabus," he added.
Instead of having tests for 33 languages, tests will now be offered for only 13 languages: Assamese, Bengali, English, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Punjabi, Odia, Tamil, Telugu, and Urdu. The number of domain-specific subjects has been reduced from 29 to 23, with Entrepreneurship, Teaching Aptitude, Fashion Studies, Tourism, Legal Studies, and Engineering Graphics among the dropped subjects.
The duration of the test was standardized at 60 minutes for all papers, with uniform numbers of questions. Kumar added that the concept of optional questions has been removed, and all questions are now compulsory.
CUET-UG, conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA), is the single gateway for UG admissions in 46 central universities, including Delhi University, BHU and Allahabad University.
In 2024, the exam was held in both online and pen-and-paper modes from May 15–31, but results, initially scheduled for June 30, were delayed. When first conducted in 2022, technical glitches caused results to be delayed until September. In 2023, results were postponed until mid-July to accommodate candidates from Manipur amid ethnic conflicts.
