CBSE 2025: Dual-level System for Science and Social Science Subjects

December 16, 2024

CBSE 2025: The board is planning for a Science and Social Science two-level examination system. As per the NEP 2020, students can choose subjects as per their aptitude.

Key Takeaways:

  • Two-level examinations for CBSE Class 9 and 10 Science and SST.
  • Enabling students to choose according to their aptitude and skills.
  • New structured textbooks to be developed by NCERT.

CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) offers two-level examinations for Mathematics as Maths Standard (041) and Basic (241) for students from the 2026-27 session onwards. However, the committee's final approval is pending.

The initiative is meant to allow students to choose the level of examination that best suits their needs and aptitudes. Students have different learning paces and styles, and this new step will help lessen academic stress.

What will Students Find in the Two-level Social Science Exam?

Many students find the theoretical subject challenging due to its in-depth content. The new changes are expected to make the subject more accessible. The emphasis on subjects like history, where the content is deeply explored, might be reduced to the basic level.

Two -levels : Basic and Standard

Regarding assessments and exams, students at the basic level are more likely to be tested on fundamental ideas or significant historical events rather than being required to interpret those events in depth. Chapters in Political Science, such as *Outcomes of Democracy* or *Federalism*, which some students find challenging, might also be streamlined.

Basic-level exams are expected to emphasize straightforward concepts, avoiding topics that demand advanced critical thinking or extensive memorization. This approach acknowledges that not all students naturally excel in theoretical subjects, like *Nationalism in Europe*, which is dense with facts and information.

The proposed changes in Social Science reflect a thoughtful effort to balance the standard and basic levels. The goal is to adapt the curriculum to meet students' varied learning needs and academic goals.

For example, in Political Science, a student who prefers a general understanding of social science may focus on topics like structures, processes, and formats, which provide informative insights. However, the emphasis would shift to a more profound analysis for a student aiming to appear for competitive exams like the IAS or seek advanced studies.

Case studies and critical thinking remain key details of the standard level, as NCERT materials already include sections designed to encourage analysis, opinion formation, and evaluation. These elements will remain central for students seeking an all-around understanding, while the basic level will prioritize foundational knowledge.

What will Students Find in the Two-level Science Exam?

The proposed changes emphasize the flexibility and personalization the new system aims to introduce to science education. "Offering choices in Science marks a progressive step toward tailoring education, allowing students to explore subjects in a way that aligns with their interests and academic aspirations."

This approach is consistent with the broader objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP), giving students the option to specialize in science or gain foundational knowledge based on their preferences.

By drawing parallels with international frameworks like IGCSE and IB, which already provide core and extended levels, these changes could help align India's curriculum with global standards while addressing the diverse needs of its students.

The new two-tier system in science education aims to align assessments with students' interests and academic aspirations. At the basic level, the emphasis will be on foundational concepts and essential information.

In contrast, advanced-level assessments will focus on in-depth analysis and a deeper understanding of topics. This flexible approach allows students to engage with science at a level that matches their future goals, whether to acquire general knowledge or pursue specialized, rigorous study.

How will it Affect the Syllabus?

"The textbook must evolve to reflect the new approach, and the syllabus will also be streamlined for the basic level," emphasized the need for NCERT to adapt textbooks in line with the shifting dynamics of social science education.

The potential benefits of these changes, particularly their impact on student performance. "The benefit for students is that they will be capable of achieving higher scores." Presenting a tailored syllabus at standard and primary levels allows students to engage with material that aligns with their interests and professional objectives, making learning more relevant and accessible.

Adjustments in Assessment Patterns and Teacher Training

Addressing the anticipated changes in assessment patterns and the need for teacher training, the importance of adapting to the new system, particularly for students choosing advanced levels.

"Assessments will undoubtedly need to evolve. For students opting for advanced levels, the complexity of both the curriculum and the evaluations will increase, necessitating corresponding changes in assessment design. This will also require targeted teacher training," she stated.

The core concepts of the curriculum will remain consistent, and the depth of understanding assessed—whether through formative or summative evaluations—will vary significantly. Advanced-level assessments, she noted, will involve a deeper and more intricate approach than those at the basic level, ensuring that assessments align with the distinct needs of each learning tier.
