Can we draw the following conclusions from the information given in this chapter? Give two facts to support your position for each of these.
(i) The Election Commission of India does not have enough powers to conduct free and fair elections in the country.
(ii) There is a high level of popular participation in the elections in our country.
(iii) It is very easy for the party in power to win an election.
(iv) Many reforms are needed to make our elections completely free and fair.
(a) We are unable to reach this conclusion. The Indian Election Commission has the authority necessary to hold free and impartial elections. It carries out the code of conduct and penalises any party or candidate who transgresses it. Government employees who are on election duty are employed by the EC, not by the government.
(b) This is the right conclusion to draw. The data showing a rise in voter turnout in recent years supports that. At the same time, there has been an increase in public participation in election-related events in recent years.
(c) This is not the right answer. Elections are consistently lost by the ruling parties. Election losses are common for candidates who have a reputation for lavish spending.
(d) This conclusion is correct. Rich candidates and parties have an unfair edge, which is why reforms are necessary. Additionally, some politicians terrorise voters and other candidates by claiming to have criminal ties.
