Question:

Five solutions A, B, C, D and E when tested with universal indicator showed pH as 4 , 1 , 11 , 7 and 9, respectively. Which solution is :

(a) Neutral?                               (b) Strongly alkaline?

(c) Strongly acidic?                  (d) Weakly acidic?

(e) Weakly alkaline?

Arrange the pH in increasing order of hydrogen-ion concentration.

Answer:

To know the acidic and basic nature of the solution, pH scale is used.

If pH < 7 then solution is acidic in nature.

If pH > 7 then solution is basic in nature.

If pH = 7 then solution is neutral.

The acidic level decreases as the pH value decreases and as the basic nature increases, the solution turns alkaline. The pH value for

Solution A = 4; Solution B = 1; Solution C = 11; Solution D = 7; and Solution E = 9

The pH value in increasing H+ concentration.

11>9>7>4>1

Solution C is strongly acidic> Solution E is weakly acidic> Solution D is neutral> Solution A is weakly alkaline> Solution B is strongly alkaline
