Question:

Write word equations and then balanced equations for the reaction taking place when :

(a) dilute sulphuric acid reacts with zinc granules.

(b) dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with magnesium ribbon.

(c) dilute sulphuric acid reacts with aluminium powder.

(d) dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with iron filings.

Answer:

(a) Dilute sulfuric acid reacts with zinc granules and forms zinc sulphate and hydrogen gas.

H2SO4 (aq) + Zn (s) → ZnSO4 (aq) + H2 (g)

(b) Dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with magnesium ribbon to form magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas.

2HCL (aq) + Mg (s) →  (aq) + H2 (g)

(c) Dilute sulfuric acid reacts with aluminium powder to form aluminium sulphate and hydrogen gas.

3H2SO4 (aq) + 2Al (s) → Al2(SO4)3 (aq) + H2 (g)

(d) Dilute hydrochloric acid reacts with iron filings and forms ferric chloride and hydrogen gas.

6HCl (aq) + Fe (s) → 2FeCl3(aq) + H2 (g)
