National Education Policy (NEP) is the biggest step in education history. It focuses more on different goals, objectives, and strategies to make better education systems at all levels, from primary to higher education.
Here are several key learnings and suggestions included in NEP.
Competency-based questions are prepared to check the multiple skills of a student. The skills which are tested are–analyzing, applying, creating, evaluating, remembering, and understanding. CBSE has taken initiatives to promote competency-based education in schools for class IX-X students.
So in 2022, the number of competency-based questions was more as compared to the year before that. Some questions were even testing two-to-three competencies at the same time.
Take a look at a CBQ from last year’s official Class 10 Social Science Sample Paper.
Here students were asked to analyze the data and answer the question based on their analytical and critical thinking.
Subjective questions cannot be answered in one word, they require explanations. For example, to elaborate on the parts of a plant, a student must at least write a 100-word answer to mention all the parts and write their significance in terms of what else the question is asking.
However, ever since the introduction of competency-based questions, subjective questions have not been this straightforward. Instead, they are more focused on student’s critical thinking, so that they can analyze the demands of questions and answer them correctly. For answering questions, having clear concepts is utmost.
So in exams, some questions came from current news of related subjects, these questions are added to the exam for checking the skills of students. The full marks are given to those, who present the answers with all the right information.
Here’s an image of a Case-based Question in the Social Science 2022 Paper.
A case is given on Independence Day Pledge which is taken on 26 January 1930, by reading the passage students will answer the three questions. Students can get a hint of answers from the passage, but they should have prior knowledge of this topic for getting full marks. So practice subjective questions to improve your conceptual clarity.

In India, we can see a wide diversification in languages and vernacular language means taking initial learning in our mother tongues. For example, people who speak Marathi should first learn how to write and read their mother tongue and then move to a language that is important for their career, an official English language.
As per Wikipedia, around 10% of the Indian population speaks English as a first language. So to create more awareness about languages, NEP focuses more on teaching mother languages as per the states.
Before the NEP was implemented, we learned things through books only. But NEP introduces art integration, which means adding art to other subjects and making them more interesting. For example, trigonometry in Class 10 Maths can be a boring concept for some students but a 3D presentation or making shapes with papers can make learning more interesting.
Other than subjects, schools can teach socio-emotional, cultural, mental health, and other areas through art integration. Learning through art makes information retain for a longer time and increases students' attention in the classroom.
Now students get different types of projects such as making presentations on water resources or human digestive systems with the use of technology. Here students learn a new skill to compete better in life after school.
It's important to note that the implementation of these recommendations will require coordinated efforts from all stakeholders, including government, educators, parents, and the community.
With NEP, children not only learn, but more importantly they understand the learning process. The policy focuses on competency-based education (CBE) to close the gap between learning and outcomes.
