Question:

Are the following statements in keeping with democracy as a value? Why?

I. Father to daughter: I don’t want to hear your opinion about your marriage. In our family children marry where the parents tell them to.

II. Teacher to student: Don’t disturb my concentration by asking me questions in the classroom.

III. Employee to the officer: Our working hours must be reduced according to the law.

Answer:

I. The first statement is completely undemocratic because a father is not allowing his daughter to give her opinion related to her marriage. As in a democratic country, we are allowed to choose our representative, in the same way, a girl should be allowed to choose her life partner.

II. This statement is also undemocratic because here the temperament of the teacher is not democratic. In the classroom, students are not allowed to talk or ask questions to the teacher.

III. This statement is democratic because the employees are demanding reduced working hours according to the law.
