Question:

Write a response to the following arguments against democracy:

I. The army is the most disciplined and corruption-free organization in the country. Therefore the army should rule the country.

II. The rule of the majority means the rule of ignorant people. What we need is the rule of the wise, even if they are in small numbers.

III. If we want religious leaders to guide us in spiritual matters, why not invite them to guide us in politics as well? The country should be ruled by religious leaders.

Answer:

I. The army is meant for the defense of the country but not to rule the country and also army officers are not elected by the people.

II. Rule of the majority means democracy, as it shows the views of all sections of people. Illiterate and poor people cannot be considered ignorant because at least they can realize which representative is good for them or not.

III. Democracy and religion cannot be mixed, especially in a multi-religion and multi-linguistic country like India. Apart from that, many religious leaders do not have any sort of political experience to run the government.
