In 1989, the death of Hu Yaobang, a liberal reformer, triggered a mass gathering and protest that took place in and around Tiananmen Square in Beijing. It was mainly a student-run demonstration which was for economic reform, freedom of the press and political liberalization. This movement was brutally suppressed by the Chinese government for which it was internationally condemned.
